If You Swallow a Nail,
Just Drink Some Alcohol
If You Swallow A Nail, Just Drink Some Alcohol is an intimate portrait of my grandparents. The two have been married for 60 years and are grappling with Alzheimer’s and hearing loss. Their resistance to the economic bloom and urban transformation in China is manifested in slow, patient shots observing the details of their quotidian life. My own position as both their granddaughter and the filmmaker is challenged in the work, and the power dynamic between us is always in flux. This work deals with age, national history, class, gender, and social structure, while interrogating the presence of the apparatus in a self-reflexive manner.
