Liwei comes from Chongqing, China where she is surrounded by fog all year (which makes her have fantasies of tropical islands, sunshine, beaches, ice cream, and coconuts). Her stage name is Young Coconut, but she does not know how to rap, and is therefore Young CocoNot. As a practicing “coconut” from Chongqing, Liwei does not eat chili pepper.

Under the illusion of tropical light, Liwei’s practice explores liminal states—those in-between places where the dynamics of continuity are complicated and themes of separation, transition, and mobility are examined. She works with a variety of media, principally moving images, but also engaged with installation, radio, and participatory practices.

Liwei is one of the recipients of the Prince Claus Seed Awards in 2023. She has received fellowships and residencies from Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, MacDowell, Rijksakademie, Headlands Center for the Arts, and Asia Culture Center.
